TARKA SINGH CANE FARMER CAIRNS

Tarka Singh was born in India in 1869 and migrated to Malaytown, Cairns, Queensland. In 1928 he married Mary nee Bullis. He had a mixed farm at near J. D. Saul and Company’s Meatworks, Queerah, White Rock, and grew, sugar cane, bananas, pineapples and a small orchard of 50 trees. On 16 January 1949 Tarka left Cairns on an Australian Airways Airline plane to returned to Calcutta, India. It was his first trip in an aeroplane and he carried onboard with him a sugar bag half full of personal luggage. He did not plan on returning to Australia and stayed in India to die.
